President Trump has dramatically escalated tensions between Washington and Tehran after warning that Iran will face severe “consequences the likes of which few throughout history have ever suffered” if it threatens America.

Mr Trump’s tweet late last night — written in capital letters — represents the latest salvo in a war of words that could accelerate into a level of ground conflict never before seen between the two adversaries.

President Trump, who has dismantled any diplomatic bridges that his predecessor Barack Obama built with Tehran, also warned the Iranian leadership: “We are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence and death. Be cautious!”
