Liwa al-Shaheed Ali Zain al-Abideen Berri ('The brigade of the Martyr Ali Zain al-Abideen Berri') is a formation of the Local Defence Forces (LDF), which is supported by the Iranians and Hezbollah. The roots of Liwa al-Shaheed Ali Zain al-Abideen Berri (led principally by Hameed Berri and Jasim Berri) lie in the Berri clan, which has been known for its support for the Syrian government during the war. The formation consists of multiple sub-units, one of which is Saryat al-Shaheed Muhammad Assani ('The squadron of the Martyr Muhammad Assani'), named for Muhammad Abd al-Qadir Assani and part of the second brigade within Liwa al-Shaheed Ali Zain al-Abideen Berri.
For context, Muhammad Abd al-Qadir Assani himself led a squadron in the brigade and was killed on 9 Ramadan 1436 AH (26 June 2015 CE) in Tallat al-Mahruqat in south Aleppo countryside. Prior to his death, Muhammad had participated in battles in Aziza, the al-Safira front and the opening of the Khanaser road in Aleppo province. He was born in 1993 and has two younger brothers: Ammar and Bashar. His body was taken by the insurgents and to this day it is not known where his body lies. It was Hezbollah's special al-Radwan Forces that named a squadron after Muhammad Assani and this squadron, led by Ammar Assani, continues to work with the Radwan Forces today in Aleppo province, part of the forces maintaining the frontlines against the insurgents.
